QOILTECH Near-Bit Technology Powers Deep Coalbed Methane Development
Release time:2022/10/04

Coalbed methane (CBM), also known as coal seam gas, is an important clean energy resource with strong development potential under global carbon neutrality goals. Most CBM exploration and production worldwide has so far been limited to depths shallower than 1000 meters. However, deeper coal seams contain far greater reserves. The challenge is that deeper formations present increasingly complex geological conditions, with poor permeability, strong plasticity, and difficulty in extending artificial fractures, making development much more difficult.

QOILTECH Near-Bit Technology Powers Deep Coalbed Methane Development

To address these challenges, QOILTECH has developed its CatLiD Near-Bit Measurement While Drilling (MWD) system, built on precision magnetic resonance technology. The system provides accurate real-time data directly from the drill bit, enabling more effective geosteering for deep CBM development. Unlike conventional MWD tools where the measurement point is far from the bit, the near-bit system delivers immediate and precise guidance, reducing cost and improving drilling efficiency.

How the Near-Bit System Works
The tool integrates high-precision accelerometers to monitor bit orientation, gamma sensors to identify formation changes around the borehole, and low-frequency electromagnetic transmission to send real-time data to the surface. It has become an essential tool for intelligent drilling, supporting efficiency gains and cost savings in oil and gas operations.

Field Applications in Deep CBM Development
Application Case #1 – Linxing Block, Shanxi Province
QOILTECH CatLiD-I 675 near-bit system was deployed in a pilot deep CBM well targeting the #8 and #9 coal seams. Despite highly complex geological conditions and operational challenges, the system successfully guided drilling through the deepest coal-bearing interval in the block.
The client praised the onsite QOILTECH team for their technical expertise, strong teamwork, and responsibility, emphasizing the importance of the technology for advancing CBM development.

Application Case #2 – Linxing Zhong Gas Field, Shanxi Province
In January 2022, the CatLiD-I 675 was again successfully deployed in a deep CBM well in the Linxing Zhong field. By working closely with the rig crew and directional drilling teams, QOILTECH's engineers helped shorten drilling cycles, increase reservoir penetration, and reduce downhole risks. The performance was highly recognized by all project partners.

Through these applications, QOILTECH's near-bit technology is proving to be a powerful enabler for the efficient development of deep CBM resources, supporting cleaner and more sustainable energy production.
